| As insight into my work, I thought my phenomonological descriptions of “When I dance, ...” and “When I choreograph, ...” might be of interest. Sondra Fraleigh, author of Dance and the Lived Body, encouraged me to allow these two aspects of my life to surface into conscious awareness and thus into written form. My thoughts as of March, 1997 follow: | |||||
| When I dance... | |||||
| When I dance I stir, I blend, I rip and I sail. I find myself -- all of my selves -- somewhat at the same time. I play games with my different personalities. When I dance I reach, I search, I push and I condense. I explore the physicality of what it means to be alive. When I dance I am alive. I live. When I dance my sensors become more active and I find myself as part of my environment. I find my environment as part of me. When I dance I breathe, I expand, I withdraw, I turn and I test. I travel through space. I create vivid, lively, fun, scary imagery. My world is enriched. | |||||
| When I choreograph... | |||||
| When I choreograph I paint the space. I give it texture, color and brilliance. I give the moment images. I use space and I define sounds. When I choreograph I play. I interact -- I mold and shape. When I choreograph I create, I find out more about myself and others. When I choreograph I have fun ..., beautiful ..., weird ... images. I let go, I allow my inner voices to speak. When I choreograph I make a mark. A momentary living breathing mark. When I choreograph I share with others. I leave traces of myself. | |||||
